The home study report is the actual document filed with the court containing the social workers finding and conclusions based on the study process. It contains a description of the parenting abilities, living conditions, and financial ability of the prospective conservator(s). This report will also contain information about the social history and background as well as the physical, mental and emotional capacities of the prospective conservator(s) and other household members. It will provide the court with a picture of the family functioning at the current point in time. The report will contain an assessment of the parents ability to meet the child’s needs and will include suggested custody and/or visitation arrangements when parents are separated.
The home study provides the most crucial information in determining the suitability of a home for a child or children's health, safety, and available space. All homes must meet standards enumerated in the Minimum Standards and Guidelines for Child-Placing Agencies. The home study is designed to elicit information on a variety of issues including:
What if I am found ineligible to adopt?
The adoption process is emotional and this is a very natural and common worry. In reality, it is rare for a home study to end in a negative recommendation. While the interview process may seem invasive, remember that the goal is to make sure children are placed in homes where they will be loved and protected. It is always best to let your social worker know--before officially starting the assessment--about any criminal or child abuse record that you feel may be a potential bar to adopting.
What background checks are required?
FBI checks and/or state criminal checks and child abuse and neglect checks are required in adoption home studies. For child custody cases, the criminal background check is at the discretion of the case.
How long does the home study process take?
Completion of a home study can take from 2-6 weeks depending on your availability and whether or not you have your background checks in hand.
